Bank on Bankers Hill: Great Fun, Great Food, Great Prices

Sunday, May 29th, 2011 No comments

On our way to witness the grand finale of the San Diego Symphony’s performance of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony last night, we stopped at Bankers Hill Bar and Restaurant for dinner. What a pleasant surprise!  We already love Carl Schroeder’s Market restaurant, but this is a  casual, fun option with a very interesting menu based on the farm to table concept.  Peaches are in season, hence the Peach salad below with candied almonds, mint and goat cheese.

Something we have never seen on a menu before: Steamed Mussels with Italian Sausage in a delicious tomato-basil broth with roasted sweet peppers.  The brine of the mussels was complemented by the sweetness of the broth.  Fabulous.

Our entrees included the Housemade Semolina Pasta Bolognese, the Hickory Smoked Tri Tip and the classic BH Burger.  Although the truffle fries were a tempting side to the burger,  the substituted small market salad was a nice healthy alternative.  Nothing on the menu was over $20.  We also tasted a great Orin Swift Cabernet Sauvignon called Palermo for only $55. The wine list offered a number of great selections at reasonable (restaurant) prices.  For the beer lovers, a huge selection of craft beers were offered.  We could not resist sharing the fresh peach pie with homemade buttermilk ice cream to finish off this great meal.

Minimal Fuss: Asparagus

Thursday, May 26th, 2011 No comments

Whether you are selecting a vegetable for a weeknight meal or planning a major feast for the holiday weekend, asparagus is a great side dish or starter.  Our simple version is offered below with a medium fuss version following.

Asparagus with roasted tomatoes olives and feta Minimal Fuss: Asparagus

Asparagus with roasted tomatoes, olives and feta

Grilled Asparagus
1 lb. pencil asparagus
Olive oil spray
Garlic salt
Kosher salt
½ lemon

 Prepare asparagus for grilling.
  Preheat grill.
Wash asparagus and trim off bottom hard end (1/2” to 1”).
Spray or brush asparagus with olive oil.
 Grill asparagus.
Grill on grill pan for 5 – 6 minutes or until tender and lightly browned.
Sprinkle with garlic salt and kosher salt.
Squeeze juice of ½ lemon over grilled asparagus.

For a more elaborate asparagus recipe, requiring a bit more fuss,  grill asparagus as above, roast cherry or grape tomatoes with a bit of olive oil drizzled over them  in a 350 degree oven for 20 minutes, slice a cup of green olives and cut 1/2 cup of feta cheese into small cubes.  Top the grilled asparagus with the roasted tomatoes, green olives and feta.

Searsucker: Fun for the Young, But Not the Fabric of Fine Dining

shrimp "spicy" + bacon bits

We recently celebrated Kristina’s 26th birthday at Searsucker. This was our first visit.

We have long been Brian Malarkey fans, both through his cookbooks and his success at Oceanaire, a favorite seafood destination for the our family and site of Kristina’s  25th birthday celebration. Our visit to Searsucker started with some great drinks, like the “Dirty Girl”, a gin and cucumber cocktail with a spicy twist, and incredible cheese popovers. Our appetizers included the octopus with saffron aioli, brie with blackberry preserves, shrimp with bacon grits, artichoke hearts prepared as a dip with greyere cheese: all fascinating presentations and flavorful palate teasers.

Our entrees included the local halibut; whole chicken with “peas and carrots” smoked corn; filet with lobster butter and cognac; tuna with proscuitto, basil and a balsamic glaze and the scallops “baja”.  Kristina had to send back the scallops as they were very “rubbery” and were a huge disappointment to the birthday girl. The entrees were generally good, but each arrived at our table individually. Entree prices ranged from $22 to $35, but sides added another $7 to $9 each, which made the entire main course somewhat pricey. The atmosphere, best described as a Hotel “W” clone, was cold and noisy – interesting in theory, but not in the reality of supporting a cozy dining experience that cushions conversation and provides soft lighting. The younger members of our party are ready to return for the “hip” atmosphere, but Gary and I value ambiance as much as the food when we treat ourselves to fine dining and we need a softer, quieter environment with enough lighting to read the menu.

Salads for Four at the Prado at Balboa Park

Sunday, May 15th, 2011 No comments

There are many reasons to visit Balboa Park.  Our most recent visit was prompted by a new exhibit at the Mingei Museum entitled Classic and Contemporary Native American Art.  The Mingei is a museum of folk art, literally translated as “art of the people” .  The exhibit was wonderful and the docent engaged the entire group in a discussion of the art.  The visit began with a short overview about the museum, while enjoying  the Angel of Temperence hanging  overhead.   The Angel is an artistic reminder to keep life in balance, something we all need to remember periodically.

Whatever your reason for visiting Balboa Park, be sure to include lunch at the Prado in your outing.  Our salads were great, the service was excellent and price was just right.

Be sure to end your visit to Balboa Park with a visit to the gardens just across from the Old Globe Theater.
